Photocopy Transfer Art
Throughout
my 22 years of art making since graduating from Brock University in
1989 I have resorted at times to the creative technique of
"transfers". I have developed a body of work that explores
various ways to translate pictures or images using 3 different
mediums for transfers: polyclens, bondex, and polymer emulsion. The
transfer technique is a form of photo based mono printing or mark
making where you transfer or remove toner from a black and white or
colour photo copy onto your support. You can never recreate the same
mark or image. This body of work I call "Transfer Stories"
based on the popular phrase "a picture tells a thousand words".
For me it is also a form of DADA art making with abandonment to
chance working intuition manipulating my copies of my photos and
drawings.
I offer a workshop on this technique that includes using the transfer technique as a base for process art and adding other methods such as collage, encaustic, coffee for staining, etc. I learned of the polyclens transfer technique at Brock and by reference to Pop Artist Robert Rauschenberg and added the bondex and polymer emulsion techniques later on.
My Transfer mixed media art has won awards over the years. In 1999, I won best in show award at the Art Center of Clarington for my polyclens transfer self portrait called “Emotional Currents”. In 2009 my transfer works was selected for publication in book called “21st Century Art” published by the team at NeoPopRealism and produced September 2009. Also in 2009, I received an honourable mention for “Phantom Riders” by Toronto Artists Mr. and Mrs. Leanord at Burlinton's BAC’s Kaleidoscope event in 2009, and the Gerald Gunter Humanity Award for “Noodling My Doodling With Thy Neighbour at the Sunrise Gallery First Juried Show. In April 2010 my transfer work
“Noodling My Doodling With Thy Neighbour” received Honourable Mention in 4th International NeoPopRealism Starz Art Competition online, a USA based web site. In 2011, my painting with transfer mixed media called “CinderPoppy” won the Toronto City Purchase Award at the Scarborough Arts Eccentrincities Juried Show and is now hanging in the City's collection.
All of my art works be it drawings, paintings and photography can be reproduce in the form of a mono photo copy transfer print in small format. The examples on this page can also be reproduced by this method which is still altering it as a new piece of art. Contact me if interested.
